Default If you could write your own paycheck...

So the unbelievable happened - the boss made an automatic payroll system and while trying to automate some of the tedium I inadvertently PWNED it!!

I was just playing around for a while and I made my payment go up 10%. That made me instantly get nervous and break out in a sweat. I tried to put it back and I couldn't. FINE they will never notice ten percent. But then it went up more and I realised I could put any amount I wanted. That's right - whatever I write and the computer banking will pay it right into my account without human intervention. You know what I'm thinking:

So there were some weird vibes I was getting in the board meeting on Friday and they normally are all over me like a rash if I make a mistake. But they were cool.

So WTF should I do? What would you do? They will only find out when their lazy asses do a mini audit every two months but I don't know when the last one was!

Practical advice and wild fantasies are both welcomed!

I suggest you look up the term embezzlement and contemplate any legal consequences your actions may have.

If you are truly concerned with correcting the error and returning the additional payment, do your best to document everything and then simply pay the extra back in person. That is what I would do in your position. It may be prudent to consult a lawyer.

If this is serious you could really get yourself into a lot of crap. Be honest and sort this out asap.

Mexico is nice this time of year. There is a little bar just outside of Mexico City that has the finest Tequila you'll ever taste.

That. We are talking potential jail time here.

Say you've noticed an error with your pay and inform them they need to get it fixed. Getting legal advice would be helpful before you do anything.

yeah, find a nice neutral country with no extradition treaty to your country (extremely important), then have your plane ticket purchased and new foreign bank account opened BEFORE you empty them out, then get on that plane as fast as you can

It will take them at most two months to find out assuming they have very sloppy practices. Even without any checking, they will notice how much you cost em per month next time they plan/re-plan project because most companies have internal billing.

My manager would find out in friday for example because as he reevaluates weekly CPW of project he would see average go up by ~5k without being notified about salary increase and without personnel change.

Expect no mercy if they find out before you tell them.

Surely you already know this, but there is a 100% chance that you will get caught.

When that happens, legal actions will be taken against you and you will have to pay back whatever extra money you "accidentally" took, PLUS interest which I'm guessing will be at a pretty steep rate. You'll then lose your job.

Or no one will notice, in which case I suggest you continue swindling the company's money as they probably deserve it for being too ignorant to catch you.

Your lack of integrity and guilt astonishes me.

Tell them what you did and get it sorted out asap.

In all likelihood you will be exposed, fired, and possibly face legal consequences.

As others have said, explain your foolishness to your boss and hope that you retain your job.

First off you shouldn't have posted anything about it here but now that you have you should take the logical way out and tell them.

Do the right thing: Turn yourself in (or, at least tell them what happened).

OK, I think I realised there was only one way out of this. I just submitted it like a bug report on email and copied all the directors and phrased it in a way that it was to prevent anyone taking advantage of it and some screenshots of me trying to put it back to what it should have been.

Fingers crossed they won't kill me.

Thanks for your immediate and very good advice everyone. Snow Bunny, you broke the tension and made me actually LOL. If I was so unethical I wouldn't have asked advice. I know what you mean though I guess. Sometimes you get in trouble when you put something back...

I would pay .. myself one MILLION BIZILLON DOLLARS!!!

lol kidding

well Divinitys, hope your boss won't do anything harsh on you. I mean yea you did increase your pay-raise by 10%. But since you're being honest, you shouldn't be fire for it. Hell, tell them you'll give back the 10% and add in some interest to see if it please them.

Well, worst case you can be like this employee.

http://www.ocala.com/article/2009102...ng-after-thief

Different story but some companies LOVES sticking to policy and I'm sure that embezzlement and account fraud isn't on any companies' to-do list. Good luck!

I think you did the right thing, its not really worth the risk. Be assured they would right royally bum fudge you if they found out. Submitting a bug report and documenting what happened is probably the right way to go about it aswell.
